Volunteer Profile:Michelle Winter
    Position:Reception - Napier Community House
    Peoples Advocacy Service

Speaking to Michelle, what stands out is her voice. You will notice the cheerfulness and enthusiasm as she welcomes you on the phone or into Napier Community House. This is just one of the positions she has taken on. The other is working for the Peoples Advocacy Centre situated in the same building. Here are some of the questions I asked Michelle about being a volunteer in the community.

    Why Volunteer?
Well before volunteering I was working for Disability Training Services HB Trust. I had been there for quite a while and when restructuring plans meant some jobs may go I decided to take the opportunity to leave on my own terms and start something new. I had been turned down for many jobs and it's then that I decided to give volunteer work a go. And I love it.

What is it about the advocacy work that you like?
It's a positive place and I like the challenges. Every day is different. I'm learning, I'm helping people I think it's satisfying and that makes a difference.

When it comes to volunteering what are your goals?
Well in the future they may be looking at employing some advocates, which would be nice to be paid for something you enjoy. I want people to come in here and feel comfortable.

If you could change anything in the world, what would it be?
Jobs for everybody, Increase Industry and exports and People can access health care and support.

Tell me about yourself. What sort of person does voluntary work?
I'm community minded; I've worked with disability. I like hanging out with family nieces and nephews. I enjoy music and have been involved with Napier Operatic Society with many of the productions they've put on and with the HB Song and opera workshop.
